The petition before the Federal Communications Commission to ban the word “Redskins” from the airwaves is a farce. Never mind that in 2010, the freaking FCC had a backlog of 1.4 million complaints of one sort of another. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who says he’s offended by the term “Redskins,” told reporters the commission is looking at this complaint that was received Sept. 2. The petition argues “Redskins” should be regulated as a profanity, like the seven 68 other words you can’t say on television. The FCC defines profanity as “language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance.” But the person who complained about “Redskins” is no simple member of the public. John F. Banzhaf III is a self-described legal activist, who listened to Washington, DC’s local ESPN radio station, WWXX - FM 94.3, until he heard the word and wrote into the FCC petitioning “to deny renewal of station’s FCC broadcast license.” This drives home the point that the crusade against the word is an issue for the leftists in Washington.
