Take care with dead languages, because they can come back to bite. The motto on the new, multi-million dollar library in Morristown, New Jersey, reads, “Nos secundus concieto omnia.” Paging through a Latin dictionary, the library staff thought the motto meant “We confirm all things twice” and left it at that, not double-checking the statement. But there are grammar rules and words can mean different things – much to the chagrin of middle school students everywhere studying Latin. When one resident of the town plugged the phrase into Google’s translation software, it was translated “We second-guess everything.” The takeaway from this?
