The U.S. Air Force is warning about ineffective strikes against ISIL, the U.S. Army has introduced Apache helicopters to the mix – not far from “boots on the ground” – and there are warnings of a renewed assault on Baghdad. In this context, National Security Advisor Susan Rice says the Obama administration is going to stay the course and will not reassess its strategy. “[T]his is very early days of the strategy,” Rice said. The U.S. will continue to do “what we can through the air,” she added, while coordinating with Kurds in Iraq and “moderates” in Syria. Again, she insisted there would be no boots on the ground because that “wouldn’t be sustainable.” Politically, she means. It wasn’t long ago that Barack Obama didn’t even have a strategy.
