Jimmy Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, is running for governor in Georgia, and he pretty well encapsulated the Left’s view of rights. “With respect to marriage,” Carter said, “I believe in both religious liberty and in personal freedom, and I don’t believe that anyone should tell a church or a religious organization who can be married. But I do believe that the government, when it comes to doling out rights, should do it equally [emphasis added].” Whoa, there. Government does not “dole out rights.” In the immortal words of the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” If rights are “doled out” by government, the government can take those rights away.
