In January, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid accused the Koch brothers of “actually trying to buy the country” after the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FCC. He launched another tirade in September by adding, “Radical billionaires are attempting to buy our democracy. … When I say that Americans are watching the Koch brothers trying to influence the November elections, I mean that literally.” However, records show the two businessmen ranking number 59 in political donations since 1989, and they don’t crack the top 10 in this year’s pivotal race. In fact, the top three political donors for 2014 consist of two Democrats and one closet liberal. Tom and Kathryn Steyer lead the pack by a wide margin with $42.95 million given to various Democrat incumbents. Michael Bloomberg came in second with $12.2 million (excluding an additional $25 million from his PAC). Fred Eychaner ranks third with $7.84 million. Meanwhile, the highest amount allocated by any Republican is $5.3 million. If anyone’s trying to “buy the country,” it’s liberals. But despite all that spending, they face a rude awakening in just a few short weeks. More…
