Old election technology is eroding the integrity of the 2014 elections. Old tech is open to bugs and hacking, as illustrated by voting machine #008958 in Schaumburg, Illinois. Jim Moynihan, who is running for the state’s house of representatives as a Republican, decided to cast his vote early, but, as he recounts, “While early voting at the Schaumburg Public Library today, I tried to cast a vote for myself and instead it cast the vote for my opponent. You could imagine my surprise as the same thing happened with a number of races when I tried to vote for a Republican and the machine registered a vote for a Democrat.” The machine was taken out of service, but the Chicago Board of Election alluded to a problem that USA Today reported on back in February: After the Bush/Gore election of 2000, the federal government spent $3 billion to upgrade voting equipment, but there has been no improvement since, which will make the 2016 presidential elections that much more interesting.
