Fox News will air a documentary on the SEAL Team 6 member who shot Osama bin Laden. This is puzzling, given what we know about SEALs, terrorists and the shooter himself. The head of Navel Special Warfare Command Rear Admiral Brian Losey sent a letter to his troops recently, writing, “A critical tenet of our Ethos is ‘I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions.’ We do not abide willful or selfish disregard for our core values in return for public notoriety and financial gain, which only diminishes otherwise honorable service, courage and sacrifice.” (tl;dr version: this isn’t the SEAL way.)

In March 2013, Esquire Magazine published a feature about the man who killed Osama Bin Laden in which Phil Bronstein writes that the ex-SEAL feared a retaliatory attack.

> “Since Abbottabad, he has trained his children to hide in their bathtub at the first sign of a problem as the safest, most fortified place in their house,” Bronstein wrote. “His wife is familiar enough with the shotgun on their armoire to use it. She knows to sit on the bed, the weapon’s butt braced against the wall, and precisely what angle to shoot out through the bedroom door, if necessary. A knife is also on the dresser should she need a backup.”

Soon after, the blogosphere claimed the man that Esquire profiled was just a loudmouth with a cleverly spun story. Why would the shooter talk to Fox – if Fox has the right person – when the consequences for talking are so high? More…
