Last month, the story broke that 17 U.S. soldiers were exposed to chemical weapons during Operation Iraqi Freedom when they took part in destroying Saddam Hussein’s inactive weapon supplies. Now, the Pentagon admits it knew 600 U.S. soldiers were exposed to chemical weapons, such as mustard and sarin gas, and yet it did nothing – not even as one coughed up blood and blacked out when he returned to the states. Another solider had a chemical burn that “took weeks to heal.” The Pentagon’s inaction is suspiciously similar to the government’s handling of the aftereffects of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. However, in response to the NYT article, the Department of Defense opened a telephone line for any veterans who want to report that they may have been exposed to chemical weapons or other illnesses in the war – the same line they used after the Gulf War.
