In the fight to take back power from Barack Obama, Republicans in Congress cannot simply pass their dream spending bill because that would result in a government shutdown like the one in 2013. However, there are two strategies Republicans can follow between now and Dec. 11, the deadline for passing a new spending bill. First, Congress can pass a normal spending bill, pork and all. If Obama does some kind of executive shenanigans between now and when the new Congress takes over, the new, Republican-held Congress could craft and pass a bill rescinding the money budgeted for Obama’s environmental and immigration plans. But that’s “sheer lunacy,” according to National Review’s Quin Hillyer because Obama will have the opportunity to veto a rescission bill. Secondly, Congress could pass a continuing resolution that will fund the government until the new Congress takes over, possibly with a provision that keeps funding from agencies dealing with immigration. Obama could still veto this smaller bill, but as Spokesman for Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) Brian Phillips said, “If he won’t accept that, it’s on him if the government doesn’t stay open.” More…
