Deadline for Iran Deal Looms

Time is short and the goals are long for the countries negotiating with Iran to hash out a deal on the country’s use of nuclear power. The countries have a Nov. 24 deadline, but the Mohammad Javad Zarif returned to Iran to talk to his government, and Secretary of State John Kerry also left the negotiating table to hash things out at home. The United States’s goal, according to The New York Times, is to allow Iran to continue to dabble with nuclear, but slow the program down enough so the country cannot quickly make a nuclear bomb. NYT reports, “One critical question is how many and what type of centrifuges Iran will be allowed to keep to continue enriching uranium. Another question is what happens to the nuclear material Iran already possesses, which could be used in making a bomb. A third question is what kind of measures can be taken to limit Iran’s ability to produce plutonium, which can also be used in producing a nuclear weapon. Affecting all of these issues is the length of time an accord would be in effect.” With the deadline looming Monday, and Kerry’s history of forging dreadful international deals, we can only shudder at the outcome of this talk with the country that calls us “the Great Satan.” More…
