Dan Pfeiffer made a Gruber-ism. The White House advisor was speaking recently at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast when he told the audience that Americans are too stupid to know the economy is chugging back to life – all thanks to Democrats, of course. “[L]egislative efforts that contributed to [the recovery] were things that were done … entirely and almost only by Democrats, as Republicans sat on the sideline,” he said. “People don’t feel as good about it as they should because of a decades’ long trend around wage stagnation. And even if you think the economy is getting better, but you’re not making much progress to be able to save for your kid’s college, to save for your retirement, because you haven’t gotten a raise in a while, your paycheck is going further, we have to speak to that rhetorically, but also with a set of policies that deal with that.” All the talk of liberal economic policy has gotten the personal finances, the wellbeing, of average Americans – the end goal of a robust economy – nowhere.
