Republicans may have found a strategy to reach out to Latinos with the message of personal Liberty and Rule of Law. Senator-elect Cory Gardner (R-CO) won in a state where 14% of the constituency is Latino. Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) kept his seat where 14% of the people living in his district are first generation immigrants. How? Coffman learned Spanish. Both talked about the contributions immigrants made to the nation. Both softened their stance on the illegal immigration debate, downplaying the rhetoric of deportations that the Republican Party traditionally used, which also alienates some Latino voters. “Villainization is a huge issue. If you can stop being nasty about it, people will listen to the things you have to say,” said James Mejia, a former president of Denver’s Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Furthermore, conservatives bring a strong economic platform to government, and that message may resonate with new citizens, as many immigrants come to this country for Liberty, and better economic conditions.
