Rep. Al Green (D-TX) announced on the floor of the House he would fly American flags over the U.S. Capitol in honor of the five football players for the St. Louis Rams who made the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” sign to show solidarity with the Michael Brown protesters at the beginning of a recent game. It didn’t matter that two players had their own run-ins with the law, according to Green. The five whose day jobs entitle throwing pigskin, smashing weights and dodging concussion injuries are nothing less than national heroes. “Somebody is going to say, ‘Well, what about people who may have committed a crime?’” Green said, “Washington wasn’t perfect but we honored him. Jefferson wasn’t perfect. We honor him. I am going to honor them for what they did at that seminal moment just as I believe John Carlos and Tommy Smith should be honored for what they did when they held their hands up, indicating they were protesting at the Olympics in ‘68.” But there is a difference between advocating against police action where it was found justified and standing up for an ideal that benefits all of society.
