A rebounding economy has done little to give Americans a more positive outlook, many of whom believe their chance at experiencing the American Dream is just that – a dream. A New York Times poll found that 64% say the American Dream is unattainable. That’s down from 72% who answered positively after the economic meltdown in 2008. Another question in the same poll may offer the explanation. When asked, “What do you think is the bigger problem in this country – over-regulation that may interfere with economic growth or too little regulation that may create an unequal distribution of wealth?” a majority, 54%, believed over-regulation poses the bigger threat. And they would be right. While the economy has turned a corner, strong, consistent growth will not be realized until we return to free-mark principles.
