First, Congress acted on a response to Russia breaking a nuclear treaty. Now, the Pentagon is brainstorming on what it can do in response to Russian saber rattling. It is even considering breaking the nuclear treaty itself to place nuclear missile back in Eastern Europe. The Washington Free Beacon reports, “Brian P. McKeon, deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, said U.S. cruise missile deployments are among a range of options being considered if Russia fails to return to compliance with the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty. … ‘We don’t have ground-launched cruise missiles in Europe now obviously because they’re prohibited by the treaty,’ McKeon said. ‘But that would obviously be one option to explore.’” With Congress and the Pentagon talking about Russia rearming itself with nuclear weapons, it’s an appropriate time for the commander in chief to step up and lead.
