Even though the CIA publicly takes credit for helping overthrow the Iranian government in 1953, the State Department is blocking efforts to release a report studying those events because of its current negotiations with Iran over nuclear power. The documents have been sitting for months, unclassified and ready for the public to see, except the State Department worries what Iran would think of the documents’ details. Richard Immerman, who chairs the Advisory Committee on Historical Diplomatic Documentation, told the Washington Free Beacon, “This is unusual since all of the agencies have signed off on the document. It’s not being held up by the continued classification of documents. It’s being held up, based on my understanding, by the State Department’s perspective that it would not serve the interests of U.S. foreign policy.” Maybe the State Department should read the documents, and recall why the relationship with Iran deteriorated in the first place.
