The IRS’s targeting of Tea Party groups began in 2011, when the bureaucracy tried to use the gift tax in an apparent attempt to target organizations that donated money to Freedom Watch, an organization that defended George W. Bush’s policies in Iraq, according to a report issued by Congress on the scandal in the IRS’s tax-exempt department. Over the years, IRS officials have described Tea Party groups as “icky,” “bad” and “different,” and the IRS continued to target and then obfuscate their actions. The House Oversight and Reform Committee said, “The Committee has identified eight senior leaders who were in a position to prevent or to stop the IRS’s targeting of conservative applicants. Each of these leaders could have and should have done more to prevent the IRS’s targeting of conservative tax-exempt applicants.” Now Congress has the proof, the 114th Congress must prioritize reforming the IRS from being the political club of the Left.
