The White House has been slowly releasing prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, shuttling them back to the Middle East under the cover of darkness. At its height in 2003, Gitmo held 680 prisoners captured in the War on Terror. Now 127 remain. The New York Times reports Barack Obama wants to keep releasing prisoners until – whoops! – the prison costs too much to operate. Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel opposed Obama’s strategy. But now, with Hagel pushed out and Ashton Carter there to do Obama’s bidding, the president can start a game of catch and release with some of the world’s hardened terrorists. For Obama, this is only a matter of padding his presidential library. J. Wells Dixon, an attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, an organization that has represented Gitmo prisoners, told the Times, “If the president doesn’t succeed in making substantial steps to closing Gitmo now, it will have a very severe impact on his legacy.” Now it makes sense why Obama traded five Gitmo prisoners for Bowe Bergdahl.
