The House started its 114th session on the right foot, by reading through the Constitution from preamble to 27th Amendment. It’s a tradition started by Republicans when they took control of Congress during the 112th Congress. The youngest women ever elected to Congress, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), stated, “This week I was proud to take the oath of office and swear to protect and defend the Constitution. This is a duty that I will faithfully uphold as I represent the people of New York’s 21st District in Congress, and I can’t think of a more fitting way to begin the 114th than to have the entire House reminded of the words of this historic founding document.” Hopefully, the young representatives like Stefanik continue the tradition of reading the Constitution well into the future.
