Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro left the respirator just long enough to pen a letter endorsing the diplomatic talks between the communist island and the U.S. Over all, Castro’s words sound as if they would be at home on Barack Obama’s teleprompter. But Castro tempered his enthusiasm by saying he distrusts American politics, probably because of things like the Bay of Pigs and last year’s Cuban Twitter episode. “I don’t trust the politics of the United States, nor have I exchanged a word with them, but this does not mean I reject a pacific solution to the conflicts,” Castro wrote. “Any peaceful or negotiated solution to the problems between the United States and the peoples or any people of Latin America that doesn’t imply force or the use of force should be treated in accordance with international norms and principles. We will always defend cooperation and friendship with all the peoples of the world, among them our political adversaries.” Just remember: Cuba is the country that agreed to host Russia’s nuclear missiles and continues to jail political dissidents.
