In the pressure to fund the Department of Homeland Security before the Feb. 27 deadline, congressional Republicans may compromise on stopping Barack Obama’s unconstitutional executive actions. With a majority susceptible to a filibuster, a veto-happy president, and Democrats who will accept nothing but a clean bill funding DHS, Republican senators are beginning to cave even before they put up a political fight. Maine Senator Susan Collins, a centrist Republican, proposed an amendment to the DHS bill that may appeal to more than just Republicans. “I’m looking for a compromise that can bring an end to this impasse.” She added that she wanted her amendment to “send a strong response to the president to counter his gross overreach of his executive authority through his issuance of the Nov. 2014 executive order.” But Collins’ amendment would drop the Republican effort to roll back Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a proposal Congress rejected, but Barack Obama went ahead and passed using his pen.
