In December 2012, 26 innocent lives, most of them children, were taken away by a deranged shooter in Newtown, Connecticut. The Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy is a harsh reminder that evil is boundless. From murders on American streets, to beheadings at the hands of ISIL in the Middle East, to starvation resulting from dictatorships in Cuba and Venezuela, there reigns in human nature an evil not easily conquered. But how we deal with that evil either discourages radical behavior, or it emboldens it. Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy responded with a knee-jerk decision when he tasked 16 individuals with “doing something” to prevent another Newtown. A draft of the commission’s report rightly pays respects to and commemorates the lives of Sandy Hook victims. But the report, scheduled for completion shortly, also transcends the rights of ordinary, law-abidiing citizens. Chris Eger at Guns.com says the panel will advocate “registering all firearms, to tracking ammo, and screening owners.” Scott Jackson, chairman of the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, minced no words: “We’re balking at taking the next step, which is literally taking the guns out of the hands of bad people.” We already have a process for that, and, last we checked, stealing is against the law – which is what happens in most cases. Maliciousness cannot be regulated, but regulations can strip away our freedoms. The way to truly respect Liberty and reduce violence is to reverse our cultural decay. More…
