Barack Obama may be asking Congress to do something it has never done before by requesting it limit his ability to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL. Congress is back in town after a 10-day recess and the legislators will have to parse Obama’s proposed Authorization for Use of Military Force – the one House Speaker John Boehner said was a rough draft. Sen. John McCain added, “I think we should not restrain the president of the United States. The Congress has the power of the purse. If we don’t like what the commander in chief is doing, we can cut off his funds for doing so. But to restrain him in our authorization of him taking military action, I think, frankly, is unconstitutional and eventually leads to 535 commanders in chief.” While America cannot afford a war led by a large and squabbling committee, it can’t afford a leader that claims broad, executive powers, yet doesn’t have the spine to fight for the nation.
