Having failed to find sufficient evidence that George Zimmerman violated Trayvon Martin’s civil rights three years ago, the Obama Justice Department closed its investigation without filing charges. The same thing is expected when the DOJ wraps up its investigation of the Ferguson Police Department after Michael Brown’s death. Outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder says it’s not because there were no civil rights violations in those cases but because the bar is too high for bringing charges. “I think some serious consideration needs to be given to the standard of proof that has to be met before federal involvement is appropriate, and that’s something that I am going to be talking about before I leave office,” Holder said. “I think that if we adjust those standards, we can make the federal government a better backstop – make us more a part of the process in an appropriate way to reassure the American people that decisions are made by people who are really disinterested. I think that if we make those adjustments, we will have that capacity.” His estimation of civil rights problems stems entirely from his view of race. In fact, in the same interview, Holder chalked up much of the opposition to him and Obama as race-based.
