It’s accepted in some circles, like at the UN, that access to the Internet is a “right.” And to an extent, yes, they are correct in that people have the right to communicate their ideas, and that government has no place regulating the free flow of information. But the folks at the Federal Communications Commission want to take it a step further. Not only should Americans have the right to the Internet, but the government needs to make sure every American can get online. National Journal reports, “All three Democrats on the five-member commission have publicly said they want to use federal money to help ensure that all Americans can afford to get online. Lifeline – which despite the Obamaphone nickname was created during the Reagan administration – currently subsidizes only phone service.” Instead of a negative right – which prevents the government from meddling in in the Internet (thanks, net neutrality) – the FCC wants to make Internet access a positive right, which they dole out as a gift to the people. Just imagine if the government took this stance with the Second Amendment. We’d have government programs that subsidize gun purchases for people who would otherwise be unable to buy a firearm. More…
