Let’s be clear: The Islamic State’s cyber warfare capabilities are about as impressive as a fleet of Somali fishing boats. But even pirates on fishing boats can do damage. Over the weekend, the “Islamic State Hacking Division” claimed to have hacked U.S. military cyber infrastructure, including servers and email accounts, to create a list of 100 members of American Armed Forces. As it posted the list online, the Islamic State Hacking Division wrote, “With the huge amount of data we have from various different servers and databases, we have decided to leak 100 addressed so that our brothers residing in America can deal with you.” The Pentagon notified the service members, but Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said ISIL scored no hacking victory. Most of the information appeared to have been gleaned from public sources, he said. While Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) said this threat against members of the U.S. military just shows a rise of jihadists threatening “so-called soft targets,” we suspect the Second Amendment could inform our view of how we should view the threat.
