Apparently, it’s in the purview of Navy commanders to approve how spiritual care is administered to their followers. Chaplain Wes Modder was not only a chaplain; he was good at it too, as he was described as the “best of the best” in an October 2014 professional review. But he landed in hot water over his beliefs about homosexuality, and now, his commander, Captain Jon Fahs issued a “no contact” order, which is essentially a restraining order. This order has kept Modder from ministering to his charge even when one of them died unexpectedly. But Modder is fighting the military’s decision. Senior counsel for the Liberty Institute Michael Berry said, “This Navy official is using the ‘no contact’ order as a weapon to punish and humiliate a decorated military chaplain. I am stunned that he would deny Chaplain Modder the ability to minister to a grieving family and other sailors.” It used to be that chaplains represented a diverse range of belief in the ranks, from Catholic chaplains, Jewish chaplains to liberal Christian chaplains.
