The U.S. Army Forces Command announced Wednesday that Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl is being charged with desertion nearly 10 months after Barack Obama agreed to exchange five terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay. For Obama, it killed two birds with one stone: By pretending to take an honorable action to save an American soldier “captured” by the Taliban-Haqqani network, he basked in the self-indulgence he so narcissistically craves, all while satisfying his desire to empty Gitmo. Six men died searching for a deserter, and five veteran terrorists were granted a waiver. To say the deal was exceptionally rotten is the understatement of this presidency. The State Department still insists Obama “absolutely” made the right decision, an assertion that has the men who worked directly with Bergdahl shaking their heads. When former Army Sergeant Josh Korder was asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper, “Do you now think the White House should regret the actions it took to bring [Bergdahl] home?” Korder replied, “I didn’t understand them to begin with. I was shocked, obviously. That’s why we all kind of reacted in the way that we did.” Moreover, Korder told NBC Nightly News, “He’s very lucky that [the Army is] not talking about firing squad and death penalty for him.” Contrast that with the valiant men who were essentially given a death penalty in the search for Bergdahl and the other innocent people who will be in the terrorists’ crosshairs when they return to battle. You could say they were collateral damage, sacrificed on the altar of political expediency.
