The Internet has been licking its chops over McDonad’s announcement that it would serve breakfast all day at certain San Diego locations. We get it. Breakfast is awesome, and it is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. But the fast food company made another announcement which signals good news for the U.S. economy. On July 1, the employees at the 1,500 corporate-owned restaurants will start to receive an hourly salary at $1 over minimum wage. “Many parts of the U.S. have a labor shortage even for lower-income jobs,” the Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote. “Like Wal-Mart, which announced its own wage increase earlier this year, McDonald’s needs to compete for employees who show up on time and serve customers with a smile, and more of those workers have more options these days.” The advocates for $15-an-hour, unionized fast food jobs still won’t be happy with the announcement, WSJ warns. The likes of McDonalds, they think, are supposed to be big, bad corporations with institutionalized food, poor jobs and super-sized customers. Plus, there’s that creepy clown who can’t rebrand no matter what he tries to do. But while customers scarf down Egg McMuffins at noon, served by someone a bit happier with their job, they should remember that it was free enterprise and a resurging economy that got us to this point.
