Congress has questions about a March 4 incident where the Secret Service was investigating a bomb threat on the White House grounds when two of their own ran over the device with a car. Although the two agents were drunk, they were told to go home. In response, Chairman for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) subpoenaed two Secret Service agents. The agency isn’t taking too kindly to the accountability. In a statement, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said Congress must go through heads of departments like him if they are going to meddle in the affairs of the executive branch. “Director Clancy and I must fight to protect them against the visibility, public glare and inevitable second-guessing of a congressional hearing,” Johnson said. “I hope Chairman Chaffetz appreciates this.” Congress can’t talk to the hand because the department wants to filter everything through the head – a damning indication that the agency is not truly committed to reform, to provide the president with the best possible protection. The distain for Congress is palatable in the department. In an act of mocking intimidation, the agency’s employees circulated the fact that Chaffetz once applied for a Secret Service position in 2003, but was rejected – possibly because he was too old.
