They will be male with a criminal record, probably between ages 18 to 37 — which makes them impulsive — and one in eight have some kind of psychiatric disorder. This is according to Dr. Michael Stone, who published his study about the people that intentionally killed police officers in the Journal of Violence and Gender. His study of the murderers of 66 American police officers found most of them used a firearm, and they either committed suicide or were killed by other police officers responding to the situation shortly thereafter. In most instances, police officers came across the men committing a crime, such as a domestic violence. Lt. Glen Mills, who serves at the Burlington, Massachusetts, Police Department, wrote into The Truth About Guns blog, “It is important in officer survival training to find out what can be done in these impulsive situations to lower the risk. Officers being polite, ‘squared away,’ and waiting for backup might be even more important than we thought.” More…
