Barack Obama gave a ringing endorsement of his former rival, Hillary Clinton, just before she announced her presidential bid Sunday. “With respect to Hillary Clinton, I’ll make my comments very brief,” Obama said. “She was a formidable candidate in 2008. She was a great supporter of mine in the general election. She was an outstanding secretary of state. She is my friend. I think she would be an excellent president and I’m not on the ballot.” That last phrase is interesting for two reasons: Hillary Clinton will have a hard time running away from Obama’s foreign policy record since she was the one in charge of “smart power” at the State Department, so he’s trying to do that for her by noting he’s not on the ballot. But he promptly undercut her by adding, “In terms of her relationship with my administration, she was focused on working on really important foreign policy initiatives.” Thanks for the reminder. Second, the narcissist in chief boldly declared before the 2014 midterms that his policies were on the ballot, and Democrats got trounced. He may utter some niceties now but there’s almost surely no love lost between Obama and Clinton.
