Stephanopoulos Just as Secretive as the Clinton Foundation

Jordan Candler · May 14, 2015

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos is in hot water after a media inquiry found that the former Bill Clinton operative failed to disclose financial ties to the beleaguered Clinton Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, Stephanopoulos says he made two $25,000 contributions to “support … the work they’re doing on global AIDS prevention and deforestation.” His donations are public record, but he admits, “I should have taken the extra step of personally disclosing my donations to my employer and to the viewers on air during the recent news stories about the Foundation. I apologize.” It’s that last point that’s raising eyebrows. A friend donating $50,000 to an old pal’s organization is hardly scandalous, and all this talk would be much ado about nothing if it weren’t for the fact he basically exonerated Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during an recent interview with Peter Schweizer, author of the new investigative book “Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich,” without mentioning there was an obvious conflict of interest. Nonetheless, ABC responded that it was “an honest mistake” and says it will “stand behind him.” The advantage of working in the Leftmedia is that journalists generally get a free pass for unethical behavior. Standards need not apply.

Update: According to Politico, he actually contributed more than originally reported: “ABC News initially stated that George Stephanopoulos had given a total of $50,000 to the Clinton Foundation. In an interview on Thursday afternoon, Stephanopoulos said he actually gave $75,000 over 2012, 2013 and 2014.”
