There goes the Left again, throwing spaghetti against the wall, hoping something, anything will stick. On Tuesday, Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) introduced legislation that would require any gun sold in the U.S. to have technology imbedded in it that would only allow “authorized” users to fire the gun. Markey said, “The epidemic of gun violence in America is not preordained, it is preventable. In the 21st century, we should use research and advances in technology to our advantage and save lives from tragic and needless gun violence.” For years, the gun industry has looked at developing “smart gun” technology (in part incentivized by government grants). And for years, the free market has not seized upon the idea. In 2013, the National Shooting Sports Foundation pointed out that the Justice Department concluded, “There are no personalized firearms available commercially in the United States.” Indeed, a 2014 op-ed at Forbes points out the software could fail at critical moments. Furthermore, no law enforcement agency has yet to equip its officers with “smart guns.” So Markey wants the government to force the industry to sell an unfinished product to uninterested consumers.
