A recent Gallup survey found that 50% of American adults say they’re pro-choice compared to 44% who carry the pro-life label. “This is the first time since 2008 that the pro-choice position has had a statistically significant lead in Americans’ abortion views,” according to Gallup. There are many reasons not to take the poll at face value, but abortion advocates nevertheless say America is becoming more hardline pro-choice. But that assertion is contradicted by a new AP analysis that, if anything, suggests Americans are becoming more pro-life in their actions — and it’s not simply among states with Republican leadership. Via the AP: “Several of the states that have been most aggressive in passing anti-abortion laws — including Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Oklahoma — have seen their abortion numbers drop by more than 15 percent since 2010. But more liberal states such as New York, Washington and Oregon also had declines of that magnitude, even as they maintained unrestricted access to abortion.” Overall, the survey, which examined the health department records of 45 states, found an average 12% drop in abortion procedures. Aside from being good news for the pro-life movement, this illustrates the importance of not falling victim to pollaganda.
