It’s a relatively good plan, one that Russia’s not happy about — which is exactly why it should have happened a lot sooner. According to The New York Times, “In a significant move to deter possible Russian aggression in Europe, the Pentagon is poised to store battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other heavy weapons for as many as 5,000 American troops in several Baltic and Eastern European countries, American and allied officials say.” A formal decision rest with Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter and the White House, but why consider it now? In 2009, Obama facilitated The Russian Spring with the withdrawal of a Bush-era plan to station a missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic in exchange for an assurance by Russia that it would discourage Iran’s nuclear program. Russia responded by supplementing Iran, invading Ukraine and other aggressive saber-rattling. The new plan would be a step in the right direction, but is it too little, too late? Had Obama not abandoned our allies to begin with, Vladimir Putin may not have felt at liberty to walk right into Crimea, where he has no plans of stopping. That’s the consequence of Obama’s leading from behind.
