At this point, it appears Donald Trump’s grassroots support is mostly AstroTurf. Those people in the crowd waving homemade signs, and shouting encouragement? At least some of them were actors paid $50 for less than three hours of morally questionable work. The Hollywood Reporter acquired an email from casting company Extra Mile looking to fill out the crowd for when Trump announced his presidential campaign. “We are looking to cast people for the event to wear t-shirts and carry signs and help cheer him in support of his announcement,” the email read. “We understand this is not a traditional ‘background job,’ but we believe acting comes in all forms and this is inclusive of that school of thought.” The Trump campaign denies the allegation but known actors were photographed inside the crowd. Currently, Trump’s celebrity is helping him outpoll far more substantive Republicans such as Carly Fiorina and Rick Perry. But his policy platforms are a farce, and he kicked off his campaign in a display of narcissistic insecurity that rivals Barack Obama’s. All that was missing were the Greek columns and the faux pre-presidential seal. It’d be a real shame if this showman claims a spot on the debate stage at the expense of a serious conservative candidate.
