As Americans were finishing up work for the weekend, the State Department released an alarming new study finding that terrorist attacks spiked 35% between 2013 and 2014, while deaths from those attacks rose by a staggering 81%. And as a growing number of Americans can testify firsthand, that uptick isn’t relegated to the Middle East. All across the country, jihad-inspired radicals have carried out or are actively plotting to carry out terrorist attacks, putting the federal government on high alert as a result. On Sunday, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told CBS News, “We face the highest threat level we have ever faced in this country today.” That threat, he elaborated, is higher than the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 innocent lives. According to Nunes, a combination of Westerners traveling to the Middle East for Islamic State training and encrypted Internet chatrooms through which terrorists are recruited here in America have made containing the threat difficult. Meanwhile, almost exactly a year ago, someone proudly declared, “The world is less violent than it has ever been.” That person, Barack Obama, is just a wrong now as he was then.
