The U.S. Army didn’t retreat when rabble-rousers launched an all-out assault on anything and everything related to the confederacy. Among other things, antagonists want the names of Confederate generals stripped from military installations, but Army officials last week refused to cave to political pressure. Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said, “The services are ultimately responsible for naming their own military installations, and as of now, there are no current plans to change policies regarding how installations are named.” The Army stood its ground because, as Chief Army spokesman Brig. Gen. Malcolm Frost eloquently put it, “Every Army installation is named for a soldier who holds a place in our military history. Accordingly, these historic names represent individuals, not causes or ideologies.” He added, “It should be noted that the naming occurred in the spirit of reconciliation, not division.” The Army responded in the best way possible — by doing nothing. Knee-jerk reactions only add to division, not reconciliation.
