Most people concerned about the Iran nuclear deal have been worrying about the concessions that the Obama administration is granting to Iran over the negotiating table. As the State Department tries to slap together a hasty deal with Iran, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) questioned the ability for the United States to enforce any deal with Iran, good or bad. In other words, who is responsible for proving that Iran is on the straight and narrow? “It is absolutely vital that any Security Council resolutions lifting sanctions contain a robust mechanism for the rapid reinstatement of sanctions if Iran fails to comply with any relevant obligations completely and verifiably,” Sasse wrote in his letter. “That means that any such resolution must contain procedures that clearly place the burden of proof on Iran. … If a dispute over Iran’s compliance arises, and the consequence is merely votes and referrals to the Security Council and more votes, then the burden of proof, for all practical purposes, will be on the United States to demonstrate Iran’s noncompliance.” In essence, the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons rests in the hands of a laurels-resting executive who has refused to engage the Islamic State or even enforce immigration laws. Future enforcement of the Iran deal only rests on the national security ambitions of the next president, the whim of one person.
