Hillary Clinton has positioned herself in her primary campaign as the heir to Barack Obama’s policies. In response, her Democrat opponents are painting a different picture of the last seven years of Obama’s leadership. Bernie Sanders has been telling packed audiences, “There is something profoundly wrong when in recent years we have seen a proliferation of millionaires and billionaires yet the average American is working longer hours for lower wages and we have shamefully the highest rate of child poverty of any major country on earth.” The Vermont socialist has also criticized the administration’s misleading jobs reports, as real unemployment — including Americans who want full-time jobs but are stuck with part-time work — is dismally high. In essence, we have Democrats running against Obama’s economic legacy. Even Vice President Joe Biden, who is mulling a presidential run, has complained about the state of the American economy. “The middle class has been slammed,” Biden said in February. “They are in worse shape than they’ve been anytime since the ‘20s, relative to the rest of the community.” In the end, Democrats not named “Hillary” are arguing against themselves. If voters are tired of the status quo, why would they go with the party whose policies caused and exacerbated this economic mess?
