Despite Loss of Power, Reid Backs Iran Deal

Despite what Reid says, this is not because of politics between Iran and the U.S.

Calling it part of the “greatest traditions of American leadership,” Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid announced he would back Barack Obama’s deal with Iran in a Sunday statement. “A nuclear-armed Iran would pose the gravest imaginable threat to Israel. If America walks away from this agreement and loses the support of our allies in the sanctions regime, Iran could have enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb in a matter of months. Iranian leaders have regularly stated that they intend to wipe Israel off the map and I believe those threats should be taken with the utmost seriousness.” Reid comes down on the other side of the fence as notable Democrat Senators like Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez. The minority leader said in an interview over the weekend that opposition to Obama’s deal is merely a “vote of conscience.” Reid believes that there is no viable alternative to Obama’s deal. In other words, he feels like he can’t say “no.” Despite what Reid says, this is not because of politics between Iran and the U.S. or even the U.S. and the rest of the international community. No, this is politics between Obama and Congress, as the deal was structured to effectively weaken the role Senate has in working out international treaties. Yet, Reid still supports the executive.
