Barack Obama went to New Orleans Thursday to mark the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina devastating the Gulf Coast. Here are a few of the absurd things he said:

“We’re going to see more extreme weather events as a result of climate change.”

It was entirely predictable that he’d use a storm as a platform for his climate change agenda. Everything is an excuse to peddle his Big Government “solutions” to a problem that is outside of humanity’s control. But Katrina had nothing to do with climate change.

“If Katrina was initially an example of what happens when government fails, the recovery has been an example of what’s possible when government works together.”

Actually, much of the recovery has happened without government interference. And as of 2008, nearly a third of the 1.5 million people displaced by the storm had not returned to their homes. It’s hard to follow them the more time elapses, but it’s an interesting effect of the storm that government couldn’t fix.

“Working together, we’ve transformed education in this city. Before the storm, New Orleans public schools were largely broken, leaving generations of low-income kids without a decent education. Today, thanks to parents and educators, school leaders, nonprofits, we’re seeing real gains in achievement with new schools, more resources to retain and develop great teachers and principals. We have data that shows before the storm the high school graduation rate was 54%. Today it’s up to 73%. Before the storm, college enrollment was 37%. Today it’s almost 60%. We still have a long way to go but that is real progress.”

And the progress is due almost entirely to the school choice reforms pushed by Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is also running for the GOP presidential nomination. Obama opposes such school reform, so his claim about “working together” rings worse than hollow.
