The Patriot Post® · Oregon Moves to Seize Cake Bakers' Property

Despite reports that the lesbian couple that originally ordered the cake said it’s not about the money, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries say Aaron and Melissa Klein are violating a legally binding order and it is moving to seize the couple’s property. Over the summer, the bureau declared that the Kleins, who used to own Sweet Cakes by Melissa, discriminated when they refused to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding. The penalty: $135,000 for emotional, physical and psychological damages. In doing so, the bureau is seeking to make an example of the Kleins in more ways than one. Aaron Klein told The Daily Signal that he and Melissa are resisting the order. “There’s legal reasons and there’s also kind of personal reasons,” he said. “If a civil court or a circuit court judge had made this order, I would consider it legally binding. But when a bureaucracy does it and I didn’t get due process, I don’t call it legally binding.” Remember: This is the couple, despite losing their business, despite threats of more government power coming down upon them, who sent cakes to major LGBT activist organizations in August with the phrase “We really do love you!” written on them. This is the danger of when government makes an ideological cause its own.
