In the face of Russian aggression in Syria, the Obama administration has doubled-down on its strategy of enabling proxy fighters to go up against the Islamic State. Never mind that the Russian strategy in the country is to protect Bashar al-Assad’s regime by bombing the forces that threaten the dictator, jihadist group or moderate rebel. “The top-line message that I want everybody to understand is, we are going to continue to go after ISIL,” Barack Obama said. “We are going to continue to reach out to a moderate opposition.” This — in the words of The New York Times — “new approach” includes directly arming and providing ammunition to Kurdish and Arab forces who plan to attack the Islamic State-held city of Raqqa. The U.S. will also ramp up its airstrikes. With Russia’s involvement, the outcome of the Syrian Civil War will change. Moderate rebels no longer have a chance of toppling Assad to institute a new government. In other words, Obama is relying on Russia to be the primary peacekeeper in the region. Talk about American leadership.
