The New York Daily News is very concerned about terrorism, and they want you to know the NRA isn’t. “The NRA — and their gun-loving Republican cohorts — are refusing once more to stop terrorists intent on getting armed in the U.S.A.,” warns the Daily News. “A legal loophole allows suspected terrorists on the government’s no-fly list to legally buy guns, but a bill to fix that will likely wither on the vine.” And just what is this mysterious and dastardly loophole? That someone whose name appears on the government’s no-fly list can still buy a gun. And in order to fix it, the Daily News advocates passage of the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act. Who could be against that? Well, anyone whose name appears on the no-fly list mistakenly, that’s who. Among those people are The Weekly Standard’s Stephen Hayes, Congressmen John Lewis and Don Young, and none other than Ted Kennedy — not to mention 700,000 other Americans, including 300,000 of whom have no known connection to terrorism at all. While one could make an argument for the late Kennedy, it’s patently absurd that so many innocent people find themselves on the list. That’s because it’s not based on much more than a name, and yet the proposed legislation would allow the attorney general to strip a person’s Second Amendment rights for the sole crime of wrongly appearing on that list. There are certainly more effective methods of background checks than a list that is so often so wrong.
