The Patriot Post® · U.S. Gives Ukraine Secondhand Nonmilitary Aid
The conflict in Ukraine is mostly being fought with antiquated armaments, with the tens of thousands of AK-74s and million of bullets the Soviet empire stashed in the country during the Cold War. The aid the U.S. has sent to the country is no different. Of the $260 million we recently sent in nonlethal aid to help the country beat back Russian-backed rebels, much of it comes from older conflicts — Humvees built in the 80s and 90s, bulletproof vests phased out of the U.S. military in the early 2000s, and so on. But Humvees do not have the indestructibility Kalashnikov rifles possess. While a Ukrainian soldier can beat back a Russian rebel with a gun manufactured decades ago, older Humvees lacked basic armament and broke down quickly, reports The Washington Post. Say, could newer equipment help turn the tide in the country? Also as National Review’s Jim Geraghty wrote, “Ukraine gets junk, and Iran gets about $100 billion in unfrozen assets. Considering how badly we treat our friends and how well we treat our enemies, it’s amazing that anyone remains our ally.” It’s just another indication of the Obama administration’s priorities.
