At a Monday press conference, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that the Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the Chicago Police Department, trying to discover if it “engaged in a pattern or practice of violations of the Constitution or federal law.” The department came under scrutiny from the likes of race-baiter Jesse Jackson and Hillary Clinton after the city was ordered to release dashcam footage showing a police officer emptying his pistol into 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. This investigation is the latest in a handful of civil rights investigations the DOJ has conducted into law enforcement agencies in such places like Baltimore and Ferguson. But in her announcement, Lynch showed that she is making the Department of Justice into an organization whose primary goal isn’t the pursuit of justice. “Building trust between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve is one of my highest priorities as Attorney General,” she said. “The Department of Justice intends to do everything we can to foster those bonds and create safer and fairer communities across the country.” This is the same AG who last week said her department would go after anyone it deemed spoke too harshly about Muslims. If Lynch really wanted to promote peace and justice in Chicago, she would direct the DOJ to demolish organized crime in the city, freeing the Chicago PD to employ more community policing.
