The Patriot Post® · Despite Multiple Warnings, U.S. Still Implementing Iran Deal

The Obama administration is prematurely burying the hatchet with Iran. Around the beginning of the month, Iran threatened to walk away from the deal limiting its nuclear capabilities unless the report prepared by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) peering into the state’s program to build the bomb was canned. The IAEA’s report was released, but it was met with resistance from the country in question. While the report wasn’t as complete as it should have been, it did say Iran was working on nuclear weaponization at some capacity until at least 2009. Remember: This report came out around the same time that Iran test-fired a second ballistic missile, in violation of international arms treaties. To a reasonable observer of international politics, this should be cause for concern over Iran’s true intentions. Instead, the United States forged ahead, calling to close the probe last week so that Obama’s “international community” can focus on implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It was not a time to compromise. In response to the concerns, Secretary of State John Kerry said the IAEA is not prevented from investigating Iran in the future. “In fact, the JCPOA — by providing for implementation of the Additional Protocol as well as other enhanced transparency — puts the IAEA in a far better position to pursue any future concerns that may arise.” But if IAEA doesn’t fully know what Iran was doing in the past, then how can it know now? It is naive to think that if the U.S. shows deference to Iran then the country will return the favor.
