The Patriot Post® · Democrats Push to Renew 'Assault Weapons' Ban
Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) introduced a bill in Congress Wednesday that would renew the infamous Clinton-era Federal Assault Weapons Ban because of the spate of high-profile mass shootings across the country. The Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 would not only ban the manufacture and restrict the sale of so-called “assault weapons,” but seal the “Charleston loophole,” or the ability for a gun seller to sell someone a firearm if the FBI does not respond to the background check after three days. (And people claim bureaucracy isn’t a political weapon.) Cicilline’s bill garnered the support of 90 House Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and the House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer.
“[A]ccording to one study, more than half of all mass shooters used an assault weapon, a gun with a military-style feature, or a high-capacity magazine,” Cicilline said in a statement. “The sole purpose of these types of weapons is to kill as many people as quickly as possible.” Sole purpose, eh? Then Cicilline hasn’t checked out the kind of long gun often stored in police vehicles across the country.
This bill has zero — zero — chance of passing on to the Senate. It’s simply a political attempt by Democrats to get every lawmaker on the record in order to make raw material for attack ads ahead of the 2016 elections. And it’s a losing issue at that. According to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, more Americans, a full 53%, oppose a ban on “assault weapons” than those that support that kind of gun control — for the first time since 1994. And Democrats think that they’ll win the White House in November with that issue? Please let them fire away.
